Caregiver-Friendly Communities

Strengthening communities by making caregiver support part of how we care for one another.

Caregivers are part of every community – and every part of our community has a role to play in supporting them. A caregiver-friendly community recognizes the essential role caregivers play, understands the realities of caregiving, and creates environments where caregivers feel seen, valued, included, and supported.

At CARE Manitoba, we believe caregiver-friendly communities are built when people come together to recognize, understand and support caregivers. Whether we are family members, friends, neighbours, employers, businesses, service providers, or community organizations, each of us has opportunities to make a difference.

Creating change can begin with three simple actions: Recognize. Understand. Support.

Recognize

Caregiving is all around us, but it is not always visible. Becoming caregiver-friendly starts with recognizing who caregivers are, the many forms caregiving can take, and the important contributions caregivers make to our families and communities.

Understand

Every caregiving experience is unique. Listening to and learning from caregivers can deepen our understanding of their experiences, needs, and challenges, challenge assumptions, and help create environments where caregivers feel understood and included.

Support

Recognition and understanding become meaningful when they lead to action. Being caregiver-friendly means finding ways to respond to caregivers with compassion, flexibility, inclusion, and practical support.

Start Where You Are

Creating a caregiver-friendly community doesn’t require us all to do the same thing—it asks each of us to consider what we can do from where we are. Small changes in our everyday interactions, workplaces, businesses, services, and organizations can collectively make a real difference for caregivers.

CARE Manitoba is developing workshops, webinars, podcasts, and practical tools to help you explore what being caregiver-friendly can look like in your setting and identify practical actions you can take.

Caregiver-Friendly in Action

We believe a caregiver-friendly community is built through the actions of people and organizations throughout our community. As this work grows, we look forward to sharing stories that celebrate these efforts, inspire others, and show the many ways we can recognize, understand, and support caregivers.
